An accident on the Beetham Highway, today, has left one woman dead and four injured.
The accident happened after 4 o'clock this morning when a woman driving a Nissan X-Trail—which had at least one passenger—tried to overtake a truck along the highway.
She crashed into the truck.
Multiple first responder vehicles had to come to the scene to attend to the injured.
The crash caused traffic to back up as far as Grand Bazaar.
Motorists can expect major delays this weekend as the Ministry of Works and Transport plans to shut down the Beetham Highway, between Barataria and Port-of-Spain, for major work on the Sea Lots pedestrian overpass.
In a release earlier, the ministry said there will be a temporary traffic disruption between the Barataria Overpass, Beetham Highway and the Port-of-Spain Lighthouse on Wrightson Road begining from 9 am on Friday and ending at 6 pm Sunday.
Motorists entering the capital city may encounter traffic delays.
This as works along the Beetham Highway have not been completed on time. This morning the ministry advised that works to replace the westbound side of Beetham culverts experienced delays due to unforeseen circumstances.
There remains in place a diversion of two lanes westbound traffic onto eastbound lanes of the Beetham Highway.in addition, single-lane traffic along westbound lane will be permitted for those entering POS via Beetham flyover.

Police suspect that Joseph may have lost control of the vehicle, overturned several times and landed in the mangrove.
She is the 103rd person killed in an accident this year.
For the same period last year, 113 people were killed in accidents.
Former national cyclist Gene Samuel was robbed at gunpoint by bandits along the Beetham Highway last night but managed to wound one of his attackers with his licensed firearm.
Reports are Samuel stopped because of a flat tyre in the vicinity of the Clear Waters facility on the westbound lane of the highway.
But he was accosted shortly after by two armed bandits. The suspect robbed Samuel of valuables and jewelry and when they were about to leave one pointed a gun at Samuels.
