Pistol and ammunition seized during police exercise

A pistol and a magazine are discovered during an anti-crime exercise conducted by officers of the Central Division, in the Couva district.

The exercise led by Sgt. Sunil Ramdial, of the Couva Criminal Investigations Department (CID), also included a party of officers attached to the Couva Police Station.

According to police reports, officers proceeded to the abandoned Community Centre along Greg Street, Balmain, Williams Street, around 3:45 pm, on August 20th and conducted a search.

Murder in Couva

A 30-year-old man has been shot and killed in Couva.

Reports indicate that on Monday evening, Charles Baird of Longdenville, was in the company of a woman along the roadway at Balmain Village, Couva, when he was accosted by two men.

An altercation ensued and one of the assailants opened fire on Baird hitting him multiple times about the body.

The police and emergency health services were contacted and Baird was taken to the Couva District Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.


Couva woman charged with reporting false kidnapping

A Couva woman has been granted $5000 own bail, when she appeared before a Justice of the Peace on Friday for falsely reporting that she and her 6-year-old son were kidnapped from their home by four men.

Sapna Chinya, 32, a housewife, of Carli Bay Road, Couva, was charged with wasteful employment of the police, and is expected to appear before a Couva Magistrate on Thursday 24th May, 2018.

Man shot, dumped in Couva

The body of an unidentified man was found in Couva yesterday.

A photo was shared on social media showing the victim’s head almost severed from the body.

According to a police report, at about 8 am a passerby notified police officers that they found a body of a man lying face up at the side of the road at Exchange Branch Road.

The man was dressed in a pair of long blue jeans, a light blue vest and a plaid blue, white and khaki coloured short-sleeved shirt.

Police found several spent 9 mm casings near the body.

Arson suspected in Couva fire

Arson is suspected in a fire which destroyed a Couva restaurant and bar yesterday morning.

Ten people employed at the Bat and Barrel Restaurant and Sports Bar at Rivulet Road are now without jobs. However, no injuries were reported from the blaze.

According to reports, the fire broke out in the early hours of Sunday shortly after a group of men accosted the security guard. A senior employee, who did not want to be named, said he was told three or four men tied up the security officer in the booth.

An assault rifle was discovered by officers of the Couva Police Station, during an anti-crime exercise, in the Couva district, over the weekend.

Officers conducted the exercise, between 12:00pm and 4:00pm, on Saturday 18th November, 2017.

Health Ministry says it's committed to opening Couva hospital

The Ministry of Health says it notes "the ongoing and justified national interest" in the Couva Children’s Hospital and is committed to opening the facility.

A statement by the ministry notes that the facility was commissioned by the then Prime Minister, Kamla Persad Bissessar, on August 14th , 2015 a mere three weeks before the 2015 general election.

UPDATE: Businessman dies after being shot during robbery

A Couva businessman was shot and killed in Couva today.

He has been identified as 42-year-old Mahendra Ramlogan.

Ramlogan was the owner of an electrical store and was at the business place when shortly before midday when two men stormed the premises.

Ramlogan was shot in the neck, chest and hand.

Officers of the CouvaCID and central division task force responded and chased the suspects who eventually crashed along Camden Road in Couva.

Two men were held. Ramlogan died at the hospital.

Businessman shot, two held

A Couva businessman is fighting for his life at the hospital after being shot about the body this morning.

It is being reported that the owner of Ernie’s Electrical store was shot in an attack that took place at Camden Road Couva.

The circumstances that led to the shooting are unclear at this time, however, two suspects have been arrested.

Police say the two were held after their getaway car crashed close to the crime scene.
