Barrackpore man held with 2 guns

One man was ar­rest­ed, two pis­tols and quan­ti­ties of am­mu­ni­tion seized, by of­fi­cers of the Ste. Madeleine Po­lice Sta­tion, dur­ing an an­ti-crime ex­er­cise con­duct­ed in the Princes Town dis­trict

Of­fi­cers con­duct­ed the ex­er­cise on Sun­day dur­ing which they pro­ceed­ed to a bushy area at St. Charles Road, Princes Town, where they found a makeshift camp oc­cu­pied by one man.

Illegal quarrying in Valencia

Il­le­gal quar­ry op­er­a­tors have start­ed min­ing in­side the State-owned pine fields of Va­len­cia, leav­ing be­hind open pits as deep as 20 feet.

Forestry work­ers who have been toil­ing in the pine field forests off Mo­ra Trace, Va­len­cia came up­on the pits yes­ter­day.

Ex­press­ing dis­gust with il­le­gal min­ing, one work­er said, “This is a haz­ard be­cause there are con­trac­tors and oth­er op­er­a­tors who work in the pine field.

Venezuelan national shot and killed

A Venezuelan national was shot and killed shortly after nine last evening.

Initial reports had suggested that a gunman had alighted from a vehicle and opened fire on a gyro vendor, who was plying his trade in the vicinity of the ABC roundabout in Point Fortin.

However, police have since confirmed that the victim has been identified as a Venezuelan national who was standing near the gyro vendor's stall.

The shooting incident sent bystanders scampering to safety.

Suspect in Trini’s murder set himself on fire

The 30-year-old sus­pect want­ed for the mur­der of Trinidad-born Kiara Al­leyne, 20, at her home in Flori­da on Wednes­day has been re­ceiv­ing med­ical care af­ter he was found se­ri­ous­ly in­jured by Mar­i­on Coun­ty homi­cide of­fi­cers and had to be air­lift­ed from the area where he was lo­cat­ed.

Ac­cord­ing to Mar­i­on Coun­ty of­fi­cers, the sus­pect was found in the Flori­da Keys on Wednes­day morn­ing and air­lift­ed to Ry­der Trau­ma Cen­ter in Mi­a­mi with burns to the arms in what they de­scribed as a “bizarre se­ries of events that be­gan with a bur­glary call.”

Diego Martin man arrested during anti-crime exercise

One man was arrested and a pistol and a quantity of ammunition seized by officers of the Western Division during an anti-crime exercise in Diego Martin yesterday.

The exercise, conducted around 3:00 pm included officers of the Diego Martin Criminal Investigations Department.

According to police reports, during the exercise, officers were on patrol along the Diego Martin Main Road, when they observed a suspect behaving in a suspicious manner.

Santa Cruz man held with gun and ammunition

One man was arrested and a revolver and quantity of ammunition seized by officers of the Santa Cruz Criminal Investigations Department, during an anti-crime exercise.

The exercise, coordinated and supervised by (Ag.) Sgt. Quashie was conducted yesterday.

According to police reports during the exercise, officers had cause to stop and search a man who was walking along Pipiol Road, Santa Cruz.

The search resulted in officers finding one Smith and Wesson revolver containing four rounds of ammunition and a quantity of marijuana in his possession.

Welder's murder a 'hit'

Naresh "Venesh" Basant, 40, of Charlieville was lured to his death under the pretence that someone needed him to do a job estimate for a roof at Korea Village in Carapichaima.

More than a week ago, Basant began to get calls on his cellphone. The female voice kept asking him if he can do a roofing job for her.

But when Basant did manage to find the time and go to the site at Jagbir Street he was instead gunned down. He was shot 12 times about the body believed to be by a high-powered rifle shortly after 6 pm on Monday.
