A Sangre Grande Magistrate freed a 25-year-old man on a murder charge but committed his 38-year-old uncle to stand trial at the High Court for unlawful killing.
Damien Cedeno, 25, and his uncle Rickie Bacchus, 38, of San Souci were both charged with the murder of fellow villager Anthony Hagley which allegedly occurred on 26th July, 2015 at the Surf Side Bar, Big Bay, San Souci, Toco.
Twenty-six witnesses gave evidence in the case.
A pistol and a quantity of ammunition were discovered by officers of the Central Division Task Force, during an anti-crime exercise, in the Chaguanas district, last night, police said in a statement.
The exercise, coordinated by ASP (Ag.), Richard Smith and including officers of the Central Division Special Crime Unit, Organised Crime and Intelligence Unit and Canine Branch, was conducted between 4:00pm and 12:00 midnight, on Thursday 25th January, 2018.
The country's murder rate was one of the topics discussed when the National Security Council headed by Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley met on Thursday.
According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, the discussions focused on the troubling number of murders for 2018, firearm-related crimes, gang activity and the preparations for Carnival 2018.
A man has been shot and killed in Piarco.
Reports indicate that shortly after midnight, Francis Stafford was among a group of friends at Oropune Gardens when gunmen ambushed them and opened fire.
The 33-year-old man was hit during the gunfire.
He was pronounced dead at the district hospital.
Investigations are ongoing.
A revolver and a quantity of ammunition were discovered by officers of the Sangre Grande CID, during an anti-crime exercise in the district yesterday, police said in a statement.
The exercise, coordinated by Insp. Ken Lutchman, supervised by W/Sgt. Alana Lopez-Carr, and including officers of the Eastern Division Task Force, was conducted between 6 am and 10 am, on Wednesday 24th January, 2018.
Acting on information, officers proceeded to Ojoe Road, Sangre Grande, where they conducted a search of a bushy area.
Foul play is suspected in the death of a man in Tobago.
Shortly after 6am the body of James Wise, a taxi cab company owner, was found along Cromson Trace, just off Store Bay Local Road.
The man's body bore marks of violence.
Investigations are ongoing.
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley is expressing a sense of frustration with the country’s crime problem admitting to telling his wife, Sharon Rowley, that: “it’s a hell of a thing I have a job where I am responsible for things I have absolutely no involvement in or control over.” He also admitted to a sense of frustration over the process for the selection of a Police Commissioner.
