Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is questioning the 'silence' of Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, over "an emerging crime crisis and the brutal murder of Superintendent of Prisons, Mr. David Millette."
In a statement issued today, Persad-Bissessar said Dr Rowley has a direct duty and responsibility for issues of national security, as Chairman of the National Security Council.
“He must speak, he must act and he must assure the nation that initiatives are being taken to bring this crisis to an end,” Persad-Bissessar said in the statement.
One man has been held for questioning in the murder of Prison Superintendent David Millette during a police exercise in Morvant last night.
Police have described the murder as 'vicious’ and ‘calculated’, saying that four men ambushed Millette and two of them shot him.
The following is a statement from the Police Service this morning:
National Security Minister Edmund Dillon, is strongly condemning the recent increase in homicides, especially the spate of attacks on the lives of national security officers.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of National Security, Minister Dillon expressed concern that officers who dedicate their lives to protect and serve the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, are apparently being targeted by criminal elements.
