Road caves-in after heavy rains

Heavy rains have caused part of the Up­per San Fa­bi­en Road in Gas­par­il­lo to cave-in caus­ing an elec­tric­i­ty pole and a tree to col­lapse on top of a house.

The land­slip was so se­vere that on­ly one side of the road is now pass­able. Land be­hind the home of a res­i­dent known on­ly as Lall al­so slid down, caus­ing a tree to fall.

PM on decision to turn down regional help: "We've been coping well"

Al­though T&T is fac­ing a dif­fi­cult pe­ri­od fol­low­ing dev­as­tat­ing flood­ing last week­end, Prime Min­is­ter Dr Kei­th Row­ley ad­mits he felt com­pelled to turn down help from Cari­com coun­tries be­cause "we have been cop­ing .... and cop­ing very well."

Row­ley said he said noth­ing wrong by not ac­cept­ing help from our Caribbean neigh­bours.

The PM made the com­ment ear­li­er to­day as he de­liv­ered the fea­ture ad­dress at the sod turn­ing cer­e­mo­ny for the $49 mil­lion Diego Mar­tin Health Cen­tre.

Flood victims kicked out shelter

Sev­er­al fam­i­lies at Ram­lal Trace, off Be­ju­cal Road, Cunu­pia, say they were kicked out of the Munroe Road Hin­du School - a des­ig­nat­ed flood shel­ter - on Mon­day, af­ter they sought shel­ter there on Sat­ur­day.

An­toinette Jaikaran, 58, told Guardian Me­dia she and her fam­i­ly were told they need­ed to leave the school’s com­pound as clean-up crews were go­ing in to sani­tise the com­pound for the re­sump­tion of class­es yes­ter­day. She said she was told to leave by Ch­agua­nas West Mem­ber of Par­lia­ment Gan­ga Singh.

Sandals gives US$50,000 towards relief efforts

Sandals Resorts International is offering US$50,000 to flood relief efforts.

The funds will come via the Sandals Foundation to the Living Waters Community.

Sandals says Living Waters will use the money to provide items such as cooked food, baby food, diapers, toiletries, non-perishable food items, medical and cleaning supplies.

It says that the areas carded to receive assistance include Sangre Grande, Kelly Village, Oropune, Arima, Tunapuna, Caroni, Chaguanas and Couva.
