Damaged gear ring delays T&T Spirit

The Port Au­thor­i­ty of T&T has apol­o­gised to pas­sen­gers who had to en­dure a de­lay ear­li­er to­day af­ter the T&T Spir­it en­coun­tered en­gine trou­ble ahead of its jour­ney from Scar­bor­ough to Port-of-Spain.

In a re­lease, act­ing In­ter-Is­land Trans­porta­tion CEO Vil­ma Lewis-Cock­burn said the de­lay was due to a dam­aged starter mo­tor and gear ring on the port in­ner main en­gine which was dis­cov­ered dur­ing start-up.

She not­ed that the ves­sel did not stall dur­ing the voy­age as was be­ing re­port­ed.

Rough seas damage Marabella homes

More than 30 homes near the seafront at Bay Shore, Mara­bel­la, were rav­aged by pow­er­ful waves caused by an un­usu­al­ly rough sea last evening.

Res­i­dents who live near the seafront lost house­hold items, in­clud­ing beds, re­frig­er­a­tors and stoves af­ter the wa­ters in­vad­ed their homes.

The said just af­ter mid­day yes­ter­day an un­usu­al wave pat­tern de­vel­oped and by 4.30 pm many homes were dam­aged by high waves.

One af­fect­ed res­i­dent was pen­sion­er Man­gree Har­ry­dath, 70, and her hus­band, Az­iz Ho­sein, 72.

Mother & baby among 5 deaths associated with Hurricane Florence

Five deaths in North Carolina have been linked to Hurricane Florence Friday, including a mother and baby who died in Wilmington.

Wilmington Police reported on Twitter that a tree fell on a house on Mercer Avenue, killing the pair around 9:30 a.m.

The father was pulled from the home and transported to a local hospital with injuries, police said.

Gov. Roy Cooper confirmed one of the deaths occurred in Lenoir County, when someone was plugging in a generator, according to a press release.

8-year-old boy dies of smoke inhalation, 9-year-old brother critical

Police are investigating the death of an 8-year-old boy who was found dead in Mayaro this morning.

His 9-year-old brother is in a critical condition after both appeared to have been suffocated by smoke.

Police were called to a home in Kernahan Village after the two boys were found unresponsive in a room at 5 am this morning by their parents.

The 8-year-old boy is believed to have died due to smoke inhalation, as investigators found a burnt mosquito coil in the room.

Heavy rain, flood affect 150 Cedros families

While some parts of the country experienced crippling water shortages, over 150 families in Cedros were left marooned Tuesday when flood waters invaded the community of Bonasse.

A rising tide coupled with one hour of heavy rainfall caused the flooding which gathered inside resident's homes and yards.

Deodath Toolsie and his wife Eileen tried to put their furniture and appliances on higher ground when the floods started to rise.

9-year-old boy dies in hospital after being hit by maxi taxi

A 9-year-old boy who was hit by a maxi taxi last week, died this afternoon at the Eric Williams Medical Science Complex.

Emmanuel John was taken off life support this morning after doctor declared him brain dead on Wednesday.

His relatives had hoped his health would improve, but instead were told by doctors at the Mt Hope hospital, that little Emmanuel was to be removed from life support at around 11am.

Emmanuel, who was set to start Standard 3 at the Aranguez Government Primary School on Monday, died shortly before 4pm.

Flood victims among recipients of grants totaling $300,000

Several families from across the country, have received grant assistance from the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services, under its National Social Development Programme (NSDP).

The grants which amount to up to $15,000 for materials, were distributed in a brief ceremony held at the Ministry’s Head Office in Port of Spain on Monday. 

Among the 22 recipients were also victims of natural or man-made disasters resulting from flood or fire damages.
