Man drowns at popular pool in Blanchissuese River

A 23-year-old San Fernando has drowned during a hike at '3 Pools' in Blanchisseuse.

The victim has been identified as Akil Stafford.

The drowning occurred around 10.30 am Tuesday.

Stafford is the 4th person to have drowned at '3 Pools' this year.

All victims were part of private hiking groups.

Disaster training for Tobago officials ahead of rainy season

With the “rainy” season in Trinidad and Tobago beginning next month, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) subregional headquarters for the Caribbean is taking its Damage and Loss Assessment (DaLA) methodology training to Tobago.

The training will run from Wednesday to Friday this week.

ECLAC says its DaLA training course will provide participants with an increased capacity and awareness for disaster risk reduction on the island.

Schoolgirl critical after tree falls on her

A six-year-old Tobago school girl is clinging to life after a tree fell on her yesterday morning.

Up late yesterday, Zikiha Lorde was said to be in a critical condition at hospital.

According to reports, around 8 am yesterday Lorde was standing outside her Black Rock home getting ready to go to school when a branch from a nearby fell on her. A group of men were reportedly cutting the tree in front of her home at the time.

Mother of two dies in house fire

A mother of two has been killed in a fire which destroyed her family's home.

The fire started around 12;15 am Tuesday.

Residents saw smoke coming out of the house, located at Immortelle Street, Princes Town and raised an alarm.

The occupants of the home, Anita Ramdath, her husband and two young children, attempted to escape.

However, the woman became trapped in the burning house.

Fire officers responded but were unable to rescue 31-year-old Ramdath.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the blaze.

2-month-old baby found dead in crib

Police will be eagerly awaiting the result from the autopsy on 44-day-old Javon Mahabir at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, today.

Mahabir was found unresponsive by his parents on Saturday.

Police reported that his mother Wendy Mahabir, 35, of Nurse Street, Newlands, Guayaguayare, reportedly put him to bed on Friday night and reported nothing untoward during the course of the day.

However, around 4 am on Saturday, Mahabir found him unresponsive in his crib, with fluid coming from his nose and mouth.

Boy, 6, killed in Turure crash; relatives fight for their lives

A Tobago family was thrown into mourning yesterday after an early morning accident claimed the life of a six-year-old boy.

Police said Daniel Black died on his way to hospital after his family’s rental car collided with another car along the Valencia stretch, near Turure. The boy’s parents, father Dean Black, 55, mother Hema, 45, and four-year-old brother Levi were fighting for their lives in the Intensive Care Unit at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex and Sangre Grande Hospital respectively up to last night.
