Former education minister and Caroni East MP, Dr Tim Gopeesingh, says health minister Terrence Deyalsingh is guilty of negligence and mismanagement of the H1N1 outbreak in this country.
In an official statement, the Caroni East MP accuses the health minister of “engaging cheap politics and abdicating his responsibilities to citizens’ lives with respect to the H1N1 (Swine) flu outbreak”.
The responsibility for care and protection for babies with microcephaly should be in the state’s hands since Government was late in responding to preparations for last year’s Zika mosquito epidemic and babies with Microcephaly were later born, says UNC MP Dr Tim Gopeesingh.
Gopeesingh was speaking in yesterday’s 2020 Budget debate in the Lower House.
Microcephaly, a condition where a baby’s head is smaller than normal, is caused by the Zika virus among other conditions.
Former Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh believes the Cabinet reshuffle was incomplete without the removal of Education Minister Anthony Garcia.
Dr Gopeesingh issued the following response to the Cabinet changes made on Monday.
"Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley must continue his essential Cabinet reshuffle by the removal of the bungling Anthony Garcia as Minister of Education.
Former Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh is criticising the financial cutbacks made in the education sector.
Dr Gopeesingh, who is the Member of Parliament for Caroni East, issued this statement today.
"The Government has again displayed its negligence and lack of commitment to the education sector through sharp and reckless cutbacks in funding for critical measures.
The Opposition has exposed the Government’s drastic reduction in support for vital schools security, the school feeding programme, provision of textbooks and repairs to buildings.
Former Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh believes the cut back in GATE funding is reflective of a lack of commitment by the Government towards education.
Dr Gopeesingh issued a statement giving his views on the changes announced by the Cabinet on Wednesday.
"By its summary decision to reduce support for tertiary students, the Government has broken a major general election promise and displayed a lack of commitment to essential human capital development.
Former Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh says any cutback in GATE will add, in his view, to the dismantling of gains made in the education sector under the previous regime.
Dr Gopeesingh is the latest to add his voice to the recommendations made by the GATE committee.
"The decision to punish ambitious tertiary students by the arbitrary whittling down of the Government Assistance for Tuition Expenses (GATE) is another onerous and atrocious education measure of the PNM regime.
Caroni East Member of Parliament and former Minister of Education, Dr Tim Gopeesingh is calling on the Prime Minister to engage in "meaningful discussions" with steel manufacturers ArcelorMittal.
Dr Gopeesingh says the impact of the plants' closure on downstream industries can be dire.

"The Dr. Keith Rowley administration must immediately engage Arcelor Mittal in meaningful discussions with a view to having the multinational enterprise continue its operations in Trinidad and Tobago.
