Santa Rosa First Peoples to march through Port-of-Spain Thursday, Arima on Friday

The Santa Rosa First Peoples Community march through Port-of-Spain and Arima on Thursday and Friday respectively, as part of the celebrations of the First Peoples.

This is in keeping with the First Peoples “One-Off” National Holiday which will be observed on Friday 13th 2017.

The theme for this year’s activities is: From Chrysalis to Butterfly: On Becoming Visible, Towards Meaningful Recognition.”

At 10 a.m. on Thursday there will be a ‘Gathering of First Peoples’ in front of the Red House, St. Vincent Street Port of Spain.

October 13th a public holiday - Gov't approves one-off day for First Peoples

The government of Trinidad and Tobago has approved a one-off public holiday for the First Peoples.

The day will be commemorated on Friday, October 13, 2017.

The announcement was made by Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts today.

The First Peoples have been calling for greater recognition of their history and customs.

The Ministry remains committed to building resilient, dynamic, culturally diverse communities and respect and recognition for our indigenous heritage is a fundamental part of that mandate.
