A team of police officers along with the Commissioner of State Lands are at this time at an illegal quarry site in East Trinidad.
One person has been detained by police.
The suspect, however, told police that he is a watchman hired to guard an adjacent piece of land.
At about 11.30 am, as the entourage of police and officials from the Ministry of Agriculture was driving through a dirt track leading to the site, three men who were at the quarry site escaped by running through nearby bushes.

The discovery was made by officers of the Central Division Special Crime Unit, during an anti-crime exercise conducted in the Las Lomas district on Thursday. The exercise, spearheaded by Snr. Supt. (Ag.) Inraj Balram, and ASP (Ag.) Richard Smith included officers of the Las Lomas Police Post and the Canine Unit and was conducted between 6:00 am and 2:00 pm.
The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) says it is increasing its efforts to identify and commence legal proceedings against persons illegally connected to its pipeline network, as well as persons illegally abstracting water from fire hydrants for resale.
The exercise targets a range of activities including illegal connections to the water distribution network, abstraction of water from streams and rivers, sale of water and tampering with the WASA’s distribution system.
An illegal quarrying operation on state lands in Wallerfield, is shut down, following a joint operation carried out by police and officials of the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, a police statement says.
The operation, which involved officers of the Inter-Agency Task Force and officials from the Ministry of Energy, was conducted at Agua Santa Road, Block #5, Wallerfield, between 9:30 am on Wednesday 24th May, 2017 and 12:05 am today, Thursday 25th May, 2017.
