Duke: Time for Tobago to be independent from Trinidad

Newly re-elected political leader of the Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP), Watson Duke, is making another call for Tobagonians to seriously embrace the idea of independence from Trinidad.

He maintains that Tobagonians must stop believing that they cannot survive without Trinidad, and that they actually would be better off if they are no longer tied to Trinidad.

PM's wife to women: Seek financial independence

The wife of Prime Min­is­ter on Tues­day ad­vised all women to at­tain fi­nan­cial in­de­pen­dence.

She was speak­ing at the Women of In­flu­ence sym­po­sium host­ed by the Bankers’ As­so­ci­a­tion of T&T (BATT) and AFETT held at the Hy­att Re­gency ho­tel yes­ter­day.

“I make my own mon­ey. I have my own bank ac­count and I cer­tain­ly don’t have to ask the Prime Min­is­ter for mon­ey,” she said.

She de­scribed her­self as an in­de­pen­dent woman who still works and who, pri­or to 2015, had man­aged the fam­i­ly’s house­hold.

PM to host free Independence Concert at NAPA

The Prime Minister will play host to a free Independence Concert for members of the public this week.

The event - the Prime Minister’s Independence Concert - is taking place at the Lord Kitchener (Aldwyn Roberts) Auditorium of the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA), Port of Spain, at 7.30 pm on Wednesday.

No one to receive country's highest award; Scrunter, Baron among 32 national awardees

No one will be given the country's highest award, the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, when the national awards are held this evening.

Thirty-two awards will be presented, eight of them being the Chaconia Medal Gold.

Secure your dogs during fireworks display, San Fernando City Corporation warns

The San Fernando City Council is warning dog owners in the city, to secure their animals on Wednesday night, when a fireworks display will take place to celebrate the anniversary of Independence.

The corporation has issued the following statement on the matter.

"His Worship the Mayor Alderman Haji Kazim Hosein, Aldermen and Councillors of the San Fernando City Council wish to inform the public that there will be a fireworks display on San Fernando Hill on Wednesday 31 August, 2016 at 8:30 pm to celebrate our nation’s 54th year of Independence.
