Opposition Leader: No objection to FATCA agreement between US and T&T

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is making it clear that she had no problem with the agreement signed between the United States and Trinidad and Tobago.

In a statement issued by the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, Persad-Bissessar said, however, that the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FACTA) Bill contains some draconian measures the Opposition does not support.

PM invites Opposition Leader to Friday meeting on "crime crisis"

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has invited Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar and an Opposition delegation to meet with him and his delegation on Friday.

The Office of the Prime Minister says the invitation is in response to a letter from the Leader of the Opposition dated 25th August 2016. 

The invitation came via a letter sent Monday by the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Sandra Jones to the Leader of the Opposition.

The letter was captioned "Crime Crisis"

Persad-Bissessar: High Court ruling vindicates UNC

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar says the United National Congress has been vindicated by the ruling of the High Court on the UNC election petition.

The High Court dismissed the petition but upheld that the Elections and Boundaries Commission broke the law by extending the time of the election by one hour.

"We are pleased that the Honourable Madame Justice Mira Dean-Armorer today upheld our submission that the Election and Boundaries Commission acted unlawfully when they extended the voting hours.

Persad-Bissessar: T&T has lost a national treasure

Opposition leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar has described the death of NJAC founder and former political leader, Makandal Daaga as the loss of a "national treasure".

Daaga passed away earlier today at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital.

Opposition Leader "deeply concerned" about GATE recommendations

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is expressing "deep concern" over the recommendations of the committee that reviewed the GATE programme.

She has called on the Government to reject the recommendations.

"It is frightening to contemplate the negative effects that cuts to GATE will have on our youth and the future development of our country and disastrous to implement such cuts before the start of the next academic year.

Opposition Leader seeks meeting with PM on bail bill, crime situation

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has written to Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, inviting him to meet to discuss the Miscellaneous Provisions (Anti-Gang and Bail) Bill 2016 and the crime situation in the country.

The Government is seeking the Opposition's support in the bill that will be read in the House of Representatives on Friday.

The Government intends to seek a two-year extension of the legislation, which restricts bail for kidnapping, gun possession and gang-related offences.

Opposition Leader wants answers on $2.5 billion drawdown from HSF

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is demanding answers from Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley on why $2.5 billion was withdrawn from the Heritage and Stabilization Fund.

Addressing supporters at the UNC's Monday Night Forum in San Fernando, Persad-Bissesar said Dr Rowley owes the nation an explanation.

"So we see then where natural gas is now at a 5-month high, the price...we see where oil is at a 7-month high, yes the prices. So they cannot say oil is $26, we are losing so much revenue from oil, gas is below $2 and so on," she said.
