Courts hit hard as public servants stay off job

Hundreds of public servants working in the Judiciary have heeded the Public Service Association (PSA)'s call to stay away from work in protest of the proposed restructuring of the organisation. 

The association's "Holiday for Justice" began this morning with the majority of public servants assigned to the country's three High Courts and thirteen Magistrate's Courts not showing up for duty. 

Panday evicted from Rienzi office he's occupied for more than 40 years

Former prime minister Basdeo Panday has been evicted from his Rienzi Complex office.

Mr Panday said that this morning when his secretary arrived at the location, the gates were locked and she was greeted with a big sign saying the Basdeo Panday Foundation was evicted from the premises.

Mr Panday has held an office at Rienzi Complex for more than four decades.

The former prime minister told us he has contacted the police and referred the matter to them.

PSA, police square off

A confrontation between members of the Public Services Association (PSA) and police today as police were called in to clear a room of PSA workers who turned up for a meeting with the Chief Personnel Officer (CPO).

According to reports, the PSA executive were to meet with the CPO to continue negotiations for the 2013 to 2019 period.

However, the CPO felt that too many people were in the room and walked out, prompting protest action by the PSA members.

The Guard and Emergency Branch of the Police Service were called in and to clear the room.

Teachers want salary hike - boycott likely if CPO fails to settle

The 2019 new aca­d­e­m­ic school term may see teach­ers boy­cotting class­es if the Chief Per­son­nel Of­fi­cer (CPO) fails to ar­rive at a rea­son­able salary ne­go­ti­a­tion with the T&T Uni­fied Teach­ers As­so­ci­a­tion (TTUTA).

The warn­ing came yes­ter­day from pres­i­dent of TTUTA Lyns­ley Doo­d­hai, as pri­ma­ry and sec­ondary schools get set to open its doors next Mon­day.

On Fri­day the CPO will meet with TTUTA to dis­cuss salary ne­go­ti­a­tions for its 15,000 teach­ers.

Of this fig­ure, TTUTA rep­re­sents 11,500 teach­ers.

PTSC blames union officials for bus failure today

The PTSC is apologising to commuters who were affected by the unavailable South Route bus services this morning.

In a statement issued today, the PSTC blames the union.

"It is unfortunate that Union Officials advised Drivers not to operate buses without inspection certificates being displayed on the bus, as not all southern buses had copies of the certificates displayed and this has since been addressed," it said.

Petrotrin breached IRA over workers' terminations

The Oil­fields Work­ers' Trade Union on Mon­day se­cured a vic­to­ry in the In­dus­tri­al Court but the clo­sure of Petrotrin will pro­ceed as planned.

The court ruled that Petrotrin had breached the In­dus­tri­al Re­la­tions Act by fail­ing to con­sult the union be­fore mak­ing the de­ci­sion to close the re­fin­ery.

Mem­ber of the In­dus­tri­al Court Al­bert Ab­erdeen said the In­dus­tri­al Court can­not grant the or­der to cease the ter­mi­na­tion of work­ers.

Petrotrin and OW­TU, how­ev­er, have been or­dered to meet from Tues­day.

CWU leader retrenched, told today is his last working day

Secretary-General of the Communication Workers' Union (CWU), Clyde Elder is among 503 workers who are to be sent home from TSTT and he is being sent home immediately, with the company offering to pay him off for the 45 days' notice that it has given him.

Elder was served a retrenchment letter today along with the other workers, giving 45 days notice, which takes them to the end of December.

It's official! TSTT serves retrenchment notices to over 500 workers

State-owned TSTT has confirmed that over 500 workers have been given retrenchment notices today.

The company says this will involve both junior and senior staff.

The following is a statement by TSTT today.

"Today, Thursday 15 November, 2018, TSTT executed on a critical phase in its organizational transformation. 

This phase involves 503 Junior and Senior staff employees receiving retrenchment notices along with payment in lieu of the 45 days’ notice.
