Stolen car recovered, two arrested...gun seized

Police officers were able to recover a stolen vehicle and arrest two men from Laventille, on Tuesday, whilst on patrol.

According to a police report, shortly before 10 pm on Tuesday, members of the Inter Agency Task Force were on patrol along Kerr Road, Laventille, when they observed a silver Nissan Tiida carrying licence plates matching the description of a car that was reported stolen on Monday in east Port of Spain.

The officers stopped the car and searched it and found a .380 automatic pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

Man killed in Trou Macaque, Laventille

Investigations are continuing into the motive behind yesterday’s killing of Jmari Villaruel, in Troumacaque in Laventille.

The incident reportedly occurred at 5:30 p.m. Reports are that the victim was ambushed as he was liming at Hitler Trace, and was shot multiple times.

Police said that Jmari Villaruel, also known as "Pokey", hailed from Beetham Gardens and was well known by law enforcement. 

No arrest has been made and investigations are continuing.

An autopsy is expected to be performed on Jmari Villaruel today, at the Forensic Science Centre in St James.

Murder in Laventille

A 38-year-old man was gunned down while seated in a parked vehicle on Thursday night at Laventille.

The victim has been identified as Sterling Singh, of Belle Eau Road in Belmont.

Police said at about 8.45 pm, Singh was seated in the driver's seat of a car at Gibson Trace off Old St. Joseph Road in Laventille, when a gunman approached him and opened fire.

Singh was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention.

Investigations are continuing.



Laventille man held with gun

A 19-year-old suspect remains in police custody after being caught with a firearm and a quantity of ammunition during an anti-crime exercise in the Laventille area on Thursday.

According to official police reports, officers of the Port of Spain Task Force were on patrol on Laventille Road, when they had cause to stop and search a male suspect.

The search revealed the suspect had one nine millimetre Browning pistol containing nine rounds of ammunition, tucked in his waist.

Two arrested for robbery and wounding

Two men have been arrested in connection with a report of robbery and wounding.

According to police reports, officers were on mobile patrol when they responded to a report of robbery and wounding at Tragarete Road and Cipriani Boulevard, around 11:00pm, on Tuesday 15th October 2019.

The officers, with the assistance of an off-duty police officer, arrested two suspects in connection with the incident and seized a revolver and three rounds of ammunition.

This was the sen­ti­ment of Laven­tille West MP Fitzger­ald Hinds dur­ing a meet­ing at the St Barbs Bas­ket­ball Court yes­ter­day.

“The rea­son why we call this meet­ing to­day is to bring this re­al­i­ty to you to let you un­der­stand that we have a cri­sis in Laven­tille,” said Hinds

He added: “This is a cri­sis be­cause you know bet­ter than me that this evening your chil­dren are at risk.

They could be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Seven homeless after Laventille fire

A bush fire got out of con­trol af­ter a man tried to burn some dried grass de­stroyed two homes and a car in Laven­tille on Sunday leav­ing sev­en peo­ple home­less.

Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, the two wood­en hous­es caught fire around 9 am in Block 22, Laven­tille.

The af­fect­ed fam­i­lies were not present when Guardian Me­dia vis­it­ed the scene around 10 am.

Res­i­dent Se­le­na Williams said she was get­ting ready for church when she was alert­ed by neigh­bours about the blaze.

“I smell the bush burn­ing and I peek out,” she said.
