Man Held and Marijuana Seized in POS Exercises

One man was arrested and a quantity of marijuana seized by officers of the Inter-Agency Task Force, during an anti-crime exercise conducted in the Port of Spain district, yesterday.

Officers  conducted  the  exercise  between  10:00am  and  11:00pm,  on Monday 3rd February 2020.

DPP to decide on charges for suspect in doctors’ abduction

Detectives investigating the kidnapping of Dr. Rudradeva Sharma and Dr. Prem Vijay Naidoo are expected to meet with the Director of Public Prosecutions this afternoon for advice, before laying charges against one of the suspects.  

The 19-year-old labourer of Lady Hailes Avenue, San Fernando, would then be charged and taken before a San Fernando magistrate. 

The suspect has been detained at the police station since his discharge from the San Fernando General Hospital last Thursday. 

Two Maloney men arrested in police exercise

Two  men  were  arrested by officers of the TTPS’ Northern  Division during an anti-crime exercise conducted  in  the Maloney Policing District on Tuesday 21 January, 2020.

According to official police reports, while officers were conducting a search warrant  at Maloney Gardens, they seized one  Glock  17 pistol,  fitted  with  a  magazine  and  13  rounds  of nine-millimetre ammunition. Police also seized  one  kilogram of marijuana found at the premises.

A  male  occupant  was arrested for the find.

Central Division Police continue crackdown on illegal guns and drugs

Central Division Police Officers continued their crackdown on illegal guns and drugs with another anti-crime exercise on Thursday 16 January 2020.

During  the  exercise,  officers  proceeded  to  Bolai  Trace  East,  Chase Village, where they  conducted a search of a bushy area,  which resulted in the discovery of two  revolvers  and  three  rounds  of  ammunition.

Quantities of marijuana and cocaine also were found.

Millennials will challenge marijuana policies of companies—HR Expert

As it stands, the policy adopted by most companies T&T for marijuana use or possession is termination.

But after the Government decriminalised possession of 30 grammes or less on 23rd December, 2019, some organisations are now forced to review their policies.

At a conference held today by the Employers' Consultative Association of T&T (ECA) on marijuana's impact on the workplace, the ECA announced that based on a survey done by the Association, 50 per cent of companies do not have a policy for marijuana. There were over 170 responses to the survey.

Prison officer in court on drugs charges

A prison officer is expected to appear in court today charged with the possession of marijuana.

Prison Officer One (PO I) Vickram Suraj was held by his colleagues at the Central Gate of the Golden Grove Prison with 36.8 grams of marijuana.

He was later arrested by police officers of the Arouca Police Station where he was charged.

Suraj has approximately 5-years of service.

Acting Commissioner of Prisons Dane Clarke said Suraj's arrest sends a message to the rogue officers and shows that the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service continues to be vigilant.

Garvin Nicholas: Brace for nasty politics in 2020

Former Attorney General, Garvin Nicholas, is predicting that the 2020 General Election season will be one of the nastiest this country has seen.

The former AG observes that globally, there seems to be a change in the tenor of the conduct of politics, and here in T&T, we are mirroring that trend.

He says we got an inkling of what’s to come in the recent Local Government Elections.

And he believes the recent Cabinet reshuffle clearly demonstrates that ‘old school’ politics will continue to dominate the local landscape. 

One Held, Two Firearms, Ammo and Drugs Seized in POS Division

One man has been arrested and two firearms and quantities of marijuana and ammunition seized by officers of the Port of Spain Division, over the weekend.

The arrests and seizures took place during an Operation Strike Back Two exercise, conducted in the Belmont and Cascade Districts on Saturday 21 December.

The exercise also included officers of the Port of Spain Division Task Force, Interagency Task Force, Belmont Operations Unit, Besson Street Operations Unit, Transit Police, Canine Unit and the Air Support Unit.

“Decriminalisation can create a next generation of addicts…”

“Young people should not be allowed to topple into a state of drug dependency because of neglect by the relevant authorities.”

That statement from Debbie Boodhan, the newly elected Councillor for Montrose in the Chaguanas Borough Corporation, who believes the recently passed cannabis legislation should be dealt with properly, in order that young people may not see marijuana as a solution for their frustration and pressure.

Cannabis activist happy marijuana has been decriminalised

Cannabis activist Nazma Muller is describing Monday’s scheduled proclamation of legislation to decriminalise marijuana as a victory.

Muller says for years she has advocated, lobbied and even petitioned for the legalization of cannabis, as she deemed existing laws in contravention of citizen's constitutional right to freedom.

She had previously expressed concerns with clauses made to the Dangerous Drugs and Cannabis Control Bill.
