Pensioner guilty of sex crime 16 yrs ago

A 60-year-old man was on Friday found guilty of committing a sex act on a young woman 16-years-ago.

Deoraj Ramcharan was subsequently remanded into custody at the Remand Yard prison to await his sentence.

A nine-member jury, in the San Fernando Second Criminal Court, deliberated for about 15 minutes before finding him guilty on a charge of grievous sexual assault. The victim, then 18, and the mother of a six-month-old baby, went to Ramcharan’s 21st wedding anniversary celebration at his home. The victim knew Ramcharan and his wife very well.

Pensioner found dead in Caroni

A pensioner has been found dead in Caroni.

According to a police report, at about 5 am Isaac Chadee, 74, of Teeluck Street, La Paille Village, was found dead at his workplace.

Police said Chadee, who carried out watchman duties was bound and gagged.

A motive for his murder is yet to be established.

In an unrelated incident, shortly after midnight yesterday Amarnath Bissoon was walking along Samaroo Avenue, off Dookiesingh Street when he was shot several times about the body. 

16-year-old Carenage boy charged with pensioner's murder

A Carenage teenager is scheduled to appear before the Port of Spain Children’s Court today, charged with the murder of 60-year-old Narine Surijlal, which occurred on Sunday 22nd April, 2018.

The 16-year-old boy, is also charged with three counts of robbery with violence, assault with intent to rob and possession of firearm and ammunition, following advice received from Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard SC, on Sunday 13th May, 2018.

Man charged with robbing pensioner of $3,000

An Erin man is expected to appear before a Siparia Magistrate today, charged with larceny person after he allegedly stole $3000 from a pensioner, on Tuesday 3rd April, 2018.

Sherwin Joseph, 28, of Puerto Grande Road, Erin, was arrested by officers of the Erin Police Station some 30 minutes after allegedly robbing a pensioner.

The 60-year-old victim was cashing his pension cheque at Beharrysingh’s Lotto Place, Erin Junction, Erin, around 3 pm yesterday, when a man snatched the money from his hands and ran towards the beach at Erin.

Pensioner shot in leg on Health Centre compound

A sixty-nine-year-old woman has been shot in the leg at the Petit Valley Health Centre.

Oharra Christian was sitting outside the facility when she was struck by a stray bullet.

The following is a press release by the NWRHA: 

"The North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) wishes to advise that a shooting incident occurred on the compound of the Petit Valley Health Centre shortly before 1: 00pm this afternoon.

Initial reports indicate that gun shots were reportedly heard and two persons were then spotted fleeing the scene.

Pensioner dies in fire

A pensioner has perished in a fire.

Fire officers were called in to respond to a blaze at a home located at 18 Bank Hill, Belmont on Monday evening.

After the fire was extinguished officers combed the burnt structure and discovered the charred remains of a man.

The victim was later identified as 68-year-old Earl Langly.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the blaze.

 

93-year-old man perishes in housing complex fire

An early morning fire in East Dry River, Port-of-Spain has claimed the life of a pensioner.

The 93-year-old man, Christopher Warner, was in his apartment building on Old St Joseph Road, when the fire started.

He was a retired police officer.

The cause of the blaze is still not yet known.

Security guard goes beyond call of duty to help elderly pensioners

Just recently, a supermarket packer shot into fame when she was filmed helping and feeding a differently-abled man who had come to her grocery.

Among the many negatives, her story was a refreshing reminder that there is still a lot of good in many people.

And one Facebook user has highlighted yet another positive, this time of a security helping an elderly woman to cash her pension cheque.

Belmont police foil $45,000 robbery of 74-year-old pensioner

Belmont police have foiled a robbery in which over $45,000 in cash and jewellery was taken from a 74-year-old pensioner in a raid on his house.

Two men have been arrested and charged with robbery and assault.

"The speedy response of officers of the Belmont Police Station today, led to the foiling of a robbery of a 74-year-old pensioner and the arrest of two suspects.
