Police Officer and Venezuelan in court for people trafficking

A  Police  Officer  and  a  Venezuelan  national  will  appear  in  the Chaguanas Magistrates’ Court today, to face charges  in  connection with  trafficking  in  persons  and  other  gang-related  activities.

The men were arrested during  an  anti-crime  exercise  conducted  in  the Central Division on Monday 10th February.

The exercise was conducted by members of the Special Operations Response  Team  (SORT),  the  Counter  Trafficking  Unit,  and  a specialized  team  established  by  Commissioner  of  Police,  Gary Griffith.

Tobago policeman to sue state over wild meat charge

Keston Kirk, the 39-year-old police officer who won his case against the state for the illegal possession of 17 iguanas, will sue the state for malicious prosecution.

This, after the officer of Sherwood Park, Tobago, was freed from all charges by Magistrate Duane Murray in the Scarborough Magistrate court on Wednesday.

Kirk, who has 19 years of service, was suspended for four years after he was charged with the offense.

UPDATE: Police officer dies in PBR accident

A member of the police guard and emergency branch died in an accident on the priority bus route in Arima, this morning.

Reports are that Corporal Isaac was driving to his station in Aranguez—via the PBR near Olton Road, Arima—when he lost control of the car.

Eye-witness accounts confirm his vehicle's right front tyre blew out, causing the vehicle to swerve to the right and lose control.

The car spun and hit a full 12-seater maxi taxi heading east.

Police say Isaac died instantly.

Cop jailed

A police officer was remanded into custody on Wednesday, after he was found guilty of five charges—including rape, assault, false imprisonment and grievous sexual assault against a teenager.

Police Constable Vishram Ragoo has been jailed for 18 years for the crimes committed against the 17 year old female victim.

Bail for cop on sex charges

Sus­pend­ed po­lice of­fi­cer Akeem James has been grant­ed $200,000 bail on charges of rape, griev­ous sex­u­al as­sault and false im­pris­on­ment of a 29-year-old Venezue­lan woman.

James, 28, a spe­cial re­serve po­lice of­fi­cer with six years of ser­vice, was ini­tial­ly de­nied bail on June 26. How­ev­er, when he reap­peared in court be­fore Se­nior Mag­is­trate Rae Roopc­hand, he was grant­ed bail and or­dered to re­port twice a week at the po­lice sta­tion. He was al­so warned to stay away from and have no con­tact with the vic­tim.

Court orders retroactive promotion for woman police officer

A High Court judge has ordered that a woman police officer be promoted to the rank of sergeant with retroactive effect for three years after ruling that she was treated unfairly. 

Justice James Aboud also granted a declaration that Commissioner of Police breached Regulation 156 of the Police Service Regulations and illegally bypassed officer Nina Rawlins for promotion. 

Rawlins, attached to the Couva Police Station, filed for judicial review in 2017 after she wrote and passed the promotion examination but she was not promoted.

The Spe­cial Re­serve Po­lice­man (SRP), who is at­tached to the Guard Unit at River­side, Port-of-Spain, is ex­pect­ed to ap­pear in court to­day to face charges of rape and se­ri­ous in­de­cen­cy.

Police officer dies two days after setting himself on fire

Two days after he set himself on fire, SRP Gary Alexander has died.

Alexander, 62, of Jebodhsingh Trace, Fyzabad died during the early hours of Tuesday morning having sustained second degree burns to 90 per cent of his body.

During an interview yesterday, his daughter Shanice Alexander, 25, said they were awaiting the arrival of relatives from abroad before organizing Alexander's funeral.

Police officer shot, bandit killed

Anand Ram a police officer attached to the Gasparillo police station has been shot in the abdomen.

PC Ram and his fellow officers were responding to a home invasion report in Marabella when the incident occurred.

Police officer shot in stomach by colleague

A female police officer was shot by her colleague who was cleaning his firearm at the station this morning.

The officer was shot in the stomach.

The incident occurred at around 9 a.m. at the San Juan police station.

The injured female officer was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Centre where she is undergoing emergency medical treatment.

A similar incident occurred at the Guapo police station in 2015.

In that incident special reserve police officer, Govindra Ramroop died.
