The man who was com­mis­sioned to draft this coun­try’s first ‘use of force’ pol­i­cy for the T&T Po­lice Ser­vice in 2011 says he be­lieves Po­lice Com­mis­sion­er Gary Grif­fith is be­ing mis­un­der­stood when he us­es the state­ment “one shot, one kill.’

Force Sci­ence an­a­lyst Michael Goodridge sat on both com­mit­tees which first came up with a pol­i­cy in 2011 and lat­er re­viewed it to make it clear­er for of­fi­cers in 2016.

Over the last few days, Grif­fith has faced both crit­i­cism and sup­port for his catch­phrase, ‘one shot, one kill.’

PCA probing 44 police-involved killings

The Po­lice Com­plaints Au­thor­i­ty (PCA) has record­ed 44 deaths in po­lice-in­volved shoot­ings. The killings have oc­curred in just 33 in­ci­dents PCA head David West told the T&T Guardian Thursday.

How­ev­er, sta­tis­tics dis­closed by the T&T Po­lice Ser­vice to Guardian Me­dia Thurs­day stat­ed that there have been 42 fa­tal po­lice-in­volved shoot­ings so far for 2018 thus far. In 2017 there were 46.

Family of cops acquitted of assault charge - again

Three po­lice of­fi­cers have freed of a charge of as­sault oc­ca­sion­ing ac­tu­al bod­i­ly harm against them in the San­gre Grande Mag­is­trates’ Court.

Po­lice cor­po­ral Ramesh­war Gopaul, con­sta­ble Anil Gopaul and WPC Tia Gopaul, who are all at­tached to East­ern Di­vi­sion, were charged with the of­fence by In­spec­tor Ken Lutch­man, head of San­gre Grande CID.

They were ac­cused of beat­ing busi­ness­man David Ram­per­sad, of Ve­ga de Oropouche, when he went to col­lect his rent.

200 more patrol motorbikes for cops

The Po­lice Ser­vice will re­ceive a boost of an ad­di­tion­al 200 pa­trol mo­tor­bikes.

This was made pos­si­ble as Na­tion­al Se­cu­ri­ty Min­is­ter Stu­art Young signed a pro­to­col on be­half of the Gov­ern­ment giv­ing ef­fect to the pro­vi­sion of Gratis Aid to T&T by the Peo­ple’s Re­pub­lic of Chi­na.

Sign­ing the pro­to­col on be­half of the Peo­ple’s Re­pub­lic of Chi­na was Am­bas­sador Ex­tra­or­di­nary and Plenipo­ten­tiary of the Peo­ple's Re­pub­lic of Chi­na to the Re­pub­lic of T&T Song Yu­min.

Police officer held for common assault and obstructing justice

PC Angelo Cedeno, 40, attached to the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF), is currently in police custody after being charged with two counts of common assault and obstruction of justice. 

Cedeno, 40, was arrested and charged today at the IATF Base, following advice received from the Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard, SC. 

According to police reports the charges arose from separate incidents which occurred between December 2017 and November 2018.
