Police officer killed in early morning accident

PC Heston Davidson attached to the Northern Division Task Force, Area West, has died following a motor vehicular accident which occurred along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway (CRH) early this morning. 

Davidson, who was the lone occupant of his silver Nissan B14 motor vehicle, was proceeding east along the CRH, around 1:00 am, on December 27th when the car struck a median and subsequently collided with a tree, in the vicinity of the Devon Biscuit Factory, Arima. 

He died at the scene. 

Search for Suspects after Police-involved Shooting

Police are searching for three suspects who may be suffering from gunshot wounds following a police-involved shooting in the Sea Lots area this morning.

 According to police reports, at around 3:10 am officers were on patrol along Production Avenue, Sea Lots when several loud explosions were heard. 

The officers responded and on reaching the 2nd Street, Sea Lots, they observed three men wearing dark hoodies, all armed with firearms.

 One of the men pointed a rifle in the direction of the marked police vehicle and several loud explosions were heard.

The man who was com­mis­sioned to draft this coun­try’s first ‘use of force’ pol­i­cy for the T&T Po­lice Ser­vice in 2011 says he be­lieves Po­lice Com­mis­sion­er Gary Grif­fith is be­ing mis­un­der­stood when he us­es the state­ment “one shot, one kill.’

Force Sci­ence an­a­lyst Michael Goodridge sat on both com­mit­tees which first came up with a pol­i­cy in 2011 and lat­er re­viewed it to make it clear­er for of­fi­cers in 2016.

Over the last few days, Grif­fith has faced both crit­i­cism and sup­port for his catch­phrase, ‘one shot, one kill.’

PCA probing 44 police-involved killings

The Po­lice Com­plaints Au­thor­i­ty (PCA) has record­ed 44 deaths in po­lice-in­volved shoot­ings. The killings have oc­curred in just 33 in­ci­dents PCA head David West told the T&T Guardian Thursday.

How­ev­er, sta­tis­tics dis­closed by the T&T Po­lice Ser­vice to Guardian Me­dia Thurs­day stat­ed that there have been 42 fa­tal po­lice-in­volved shoot­ings so far for 2018 thus far. In 2017 there were 46.

Family of cops acquitted of assault charge - again

Three po­lice of­fi­cers have freed of a charge of as­sault oc­ca­sion­ing ac­tu­al bod­i­ly harm against them in the San­gre Grande Mag­is­trates’ Court.

Po­lice cor­po­ral Ramesh­war Gopaul, con­sta­ble Anil Gopaul and WPC Tia Gopaul, who are all at­tached to East­ern Di­vi­sion, were charged with the of­fence by In­spec­tor Ken Lutch­man, head of San­gre Grande CID.

They were ac­cused of beat­ing busi­ness­man David Ram­per­sad, of Ve­ga de Oropouche, when he went to col­lect his rent.
