A woman and her husband who stole a security camera system because the wife “liked it” and she is often alone home were each jailed for nine months yesterday.
Mala Rampersad-Deonarine, 46, a geriatric nurse and Neil Deonarine, 49, a labourer, of Carat Hill, Barrackpore, were caught red-handed stealing the camera system, three ladies’ vest and a men’s short pants, together valued at $2,794.75 from PriceSmart Ltd, in La Romaine.
An assistant manager employed with Price Smart Trinidad Ltd, Mausica location, appeared before Arima 2nd Court Magistrate, Debby-Ann Bassaw, charged in the July 3rd ,2016, $1.5Mn robbery at the business place, a statement by the Police Service says.
Kerlon Smith, of No.20 Eventide Court Trincity, had been a Price Smart employee for three years.
Smith, 33, was remanded in custody until July 18th, 2016, and advised by the court to apply to a judge in chamber for bail.
Police are currently searching for three men wanted for robbing the Mausica branch of Pricesmart last night.
It's reported that around 8 o'clock, three armed men entered the building and then ordered one of the managers to open a vault in which cash was being kept.
The assailants stuffed a large sum of cash into bags and initial estimates place the sum to be at $1.5 million dollars. T
The suspects managed to escape despite several road blocks that were set up by police.
No one was hurt in the ordeal.
Retail supermarket chain, PriceSmart has issued a statement saying it is open to a meeting with the Oilfield Workers Trade Union as soon as possible to discuss their concerns.
It follows a protest by the OWTU at PriceSmart's Movietowne, Port-of-Spain branch on Tuesday.
PriceSmart says it was never invited by the OWTU to sit down and discuss the issues.
