Thirty two junior steelbands will be vying for championship status in their respective categories, this weekend, at the National Schools Panorama Finals.
The competition takes place on Sunday 26 January, 2020 from 9:00 am, at the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain.
The three categories being contested are Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and Elite (21 & Under Group).
Finalists were selected after several days of judging at the competitors’ schools, panyards and communities.
Primary school principals are asking Education Minister Anthony Garcia, whether he intends to arm them with batons and bulletproof vests.
This question, they say, is in response to the minister's statement that principals should take responsibility, along with security guards, for manning the school gates.
The principals say the Education Minister is misinterpreting the Education Act which speaks to school security.
The Ministry of Education has met with 15 denominational boards of education to address concerns presented by them with the proposed standardized primary schools registration form.
The MInistry said in a statement that discussions focused on securing the religious mandates of each of the boards, and the ministry’s commitment through the agreements made in the Concordat of 1960.
The Education Ministry is to monitor, through school supervisors, a practise by primary school principals to screen students who apply for enrollment into their schools.
Acting Leader of Government Business in the Senate, Agriculture Minister Clarence Rambharat spoke on the issue as he answered a question in the Senate on behalf of the Minister of Education, Anthony Garcia.
