Minister of National Security Edmund Dillon has "strongly condemned" the killing of Prison Officer Glenford Gardner whom he described as "a dedicated law enforcement officer".
A statement by the Ministry says Minister Dillon extends deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of Officer Gardener on behalf of the Ministry of National Security and by extension the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
Prisons Commissioner Sterling Stewart says the Prison Service is under attack.
The Commissioner has issued a statement demanding justice for the murder of prison officer Fitz Albert Victor this morning.
The following is his statement:
"It is with a heavy heart that I write this message this morning. Fitz Albert Victor, a bright young mind, an exemplary Prisons Officer, who is known throughout the Institution and his community as a gentleman and an honourable servant, has been gunned down.
A 32-year-old prisons officer was fatally shot outside his home in Laventille this morning.
Police reports indicate that Victor Simon was washing his vehicle outside his Pritzgar Lands home in Laventille, when two men approached him and fired several shots hitting him in his head.
Simon was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital in a police vehicle but died while undergoing emergency surgery.
Police investigation are continuing.
