Mikela Panday, the former Oropouche West Member of Parliament and daughter of UNC founder Basdeo Panday, will break her silence on what role she will play in the upcoming UNC Internal Elections, at a media conference at 1 pm on Friday.
The announcement will come just half an hour before Parliament resumes, with a major change in the Opposition also related to the election, that of Dr Roodal Moonilal being replaced as Chief Whip by Ganga Singh.
Chairman of the UNC's Women's Arm, Stacy Roopnarine, has announced her support for Vasant Bharath as political leader of the UNC.
Roopnarine issued a statement today confirming her support, saying the party needs change and that Bharath is the only person who can lead the party forward at this time.
The Women's Arm's Public Relations Officer had issued a statement two weeks ago, in support of Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
The following is Roopnarine's statement:
UNC Senator Vasant Bharath has resigned as a UNC Senator with immediate effect, citing his decision to run for the post of political leader of the UNC in the December 5th internal elections.
Bharath's announcement comes via a letter he has written to Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, in which he told Persad-Bissessar that it would be inappropriate for him to continue in that position at this time.
The following is the letter:
"Dear Mrs Persad-Bissessar,
Chaguanas West MP Ganga Singh has been appointed Opposition Chief Whip, replacing Dr Roodal Moonilal who resigned from the post to contest the leadership post in the upcoming UNC Internal Election.
The announcement was made today by the Office of the Leader of the Opposition.
The following is the full statement.
