Local political parties say they are ready for Local Government Elections (LGE) 2019, which are scheduled to take place on Monday December 2nd.
On Friday, during the Opposition Leader’s response to the 2020 Budget Presentation, the Prime Minister’s Office released a brief statement confirming the date for the local government elections.
The United National Congress will begin screening for the upcoming Local Government elections on Thursday this week.
The first phase of the process will be held at the UNC’s Eastern Regional Office in Tunapuna with the screening of candidates for the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation and the Arima Borough Corporation from 3 pm.
Screening for the Tunapuna/ Piarco Regional Corporation will take place on Friday, 12th July from 3 pm at the same venue.
Changes to the Immigration Regulations, proposed by the Government will not receive any support from the Opposition.
Speaking at the United National Congress' Monday Night Forum at the Aranjuez North Secondar School, Opposition leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar said that the Government filed "something known as Immigration Regulation".
"And we have applied to annul those regulations," she said.
The United National Congress has appointed attorney-at-law Ashvani Mahabir as its new Opposition Senator following the resignation of Gerald Ramdeen.
In a statement the UNC says Mahabir, who is also a communications consultant, has been appointed to its team of senators.
It goes on to say that Mahabir, has a long-standing relationship with the unc having served as youth arm chairman and working in various capacities in research as well as political and strategic communication over the years.

The bill was passed unanimously Monday night after the Government and Opposition agreed to several changes to the initial bill proposed by Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi during an almost 12-hourlong session.

Government has fired National Maintenance Security Company (MTS) board member Ian Forde just hours after he appeared on a United National Congress (UNC) Monday Night Forum platform.
In a letter dated March 18, Finance Minister Colm Imbert dismissed Forde citing a "reconstitution of the board of directors."
However, in a brief interview Tuesday, Forde said he was surprised by the news of his dismissal.
"There is no doubt in my mind that my dismissal had to do with my appearance on the platform," he said.
Public Relations Officer of the United National Congress, Senator Anita Haynes says the government must move to stop the use of Boeing Max 8s in T&T's airspace.
“Instead of taking time to blast a newspaper reporter for an article on concerns regarding Boeing 737 Max 8, the Finance Minister, who is the line Minister for Caribbean Airlines, should take immediate action to suspend the intended lease of 12 of these aircraft,” Haynes said in a statement.
