UNC Local Gov't screening begins Thursday

The United National Congress will begin screening for the upcoming Local Government elections on Thursday this week.

The first phase of the process will be held at the UNC’s Eastern Regional Office in Tunapuna with the screening of candidates for the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation and the Arima Borough Corporation from 3 pm.

Screening for the Tunapuna/ Piarco Regional Corporation will take place on Friday, 12th July from 3 pm at the same venue.

Kamla:No Opposition support for Immigration changes

Changes to the Im­mi­gra­tion Reg­u­la­tions, pro­posed by the Gov­ern­ment will not re­ceive any sup­port from the Op­po­si­tion.

Speak­ing at the Unit­ed Na­tion­al Con­gress' Mon­day Night Fo­rum at the Aran­juez North Sec­on­dar School, Op­po­si­tion leader Kam­la Per­sad-Bisses­sar said that the Gov­ern­ment filed "some­thing known as Im­mi­gra­tion Reg­u­la­tion".

"And we have ap­plied to an­nul those reg­u­la­tions," she said.

Mahabir replaces Ramdeen as UNC senator

The United National Congress has appointed attorney-at-law Ashvani Mahabir as its new Opposition Senator following the resignation of Gerald Ramdeen.

In a statement the UNC says Mahabir, who is also a communications consultant, has been appointed to its team of senators.

It goes on to say that Mahabir, has a long-standing relationship with the unc having served as youth arm chairman and working in various capacities in research as well as political and strategic communication over the years.

Kamla: UNC ensured citizens were protected

p­po­si­tion Leader Kam­la Per­sad-Bisses­sar says the UNC on­ly agreed to sup­port the Civ­il As­set Re­cov­ery and Man­age­ment and Un­ex­plained Wealth Bill, 2019, af­ter it en­sured the fun­da­men­tal rights of cit­i­zens were not erod­ed and that the prop­er­ty of in­no­cent cit­i­zens would not be in jeop­ardy.

The bill was passed unan­i­mous­ly Mon­day night af­ter the Gov­ern­ment and Op­po­si­tion agreed to sev­er­al changes to the ini­tial bill pro­posed by At­tor­ney Gen­er­al Faris Al-Rawi dur­ing an al­most 12-hour­long ses­sion.

UNC calls on citizens to condemn Wealth Bill

The Unit­ed Na­tion­al Con­gress (UNC) is again call­ing on cit­i­zens to join to­geth­er to con­demn two pieces of leg­is­la­tion be­ing put for­ward by Gov­ern­ment.

Speak­ing at a press con­fer­ence at the Op­po­si­tion Leader's Of­fice in Port-of-Spain yes­ter­day, Op­po­si­tion Sen­a­tors Wade Mark and Ani­ta Haynes re­newed the par­ty's crit­i­cism of the Non-Prof­it Or­gan­i­sa­tions Bill and the Civ­il As­set Re­cov­ery and Man­age­ment and Un­ex­plained Wealth Bill.

MTS board exec fired after UNC appearance

Gov­ern­ment has fired Na­tion­al Main­te­nance Se­cu­ri­ty Com­pa­ny (MTS) board mem­ber Ian Forde just hours af­ter he ap­peared on a Unit­ed Na­tion­al Con­gress (UNC) Mon­day Night Fo­rum plat­form.

In a let­ter dat­ed March 18, Fi­nance Min­is­ter Colm Im­bert dis­missed Forde cit­ing a "re­con­sti­tu­tion of the board of di­rec­tors."

How­ev­er, in a brief in­ter­view Tues­day, Forde said he was sur­prised by the news of his dis­missal.

"There is no doubt in my mind that my dis­missal had to do with my ap­pear­ance on the plat­form," he said.

UNC PRO: Ground Max 8s over T&T

Public Relations Officer of the United National Congress, Senator Anita Haynes says the government must move to stop the use of Boeing Max 8s in T&T's airspace. 

“Instead of taking time to blast a newspaper reporter for an article on concerns regarding Boeing 737 Max 8, the Finance Minister, who is the line Minister for Caribbean Airlines, should take immediate action to suspend the intended lease of 12 of these aircraft,” Haynes said in a statement. 

UNC queries CJ link to PM during election petition case

A Unit­ed Na­tion­al Con­gress (UNC) mem­ber has res­ur­rect­ed the three-year-old elec­tion pe­ti­tion and is now seek­ing to sue Chief Jus­tice Ivor Archie for his role in the de­ter­mi­na­tion which cost him the seat back in 2015.

In a pre-ac­tion pro­to­col let­ter yes­ter­day, UNC sen­a­tor and at­tor­ney Ger­ald Ramdeen rep­re­sent­ed Dr She­vanand Gopeesingh, who was the UNC can­di­date for San Fer­nan­do West and went up against At­tor­ney Gen­er­al Faris Al-Rawi.
