PSA President Watson Duke is at this time "pounding" out a tune on the glass doors at the Ministry of Finance as he demands to be let into the government office.
Accompanied by a small contingent of public servants, Duke and senior officers at the Public Services Association are calling for the settlement of outstanding arrears owed to government workers for the period 2014 to 2016.
“We will not be, we will not be moved.”
These words are no foreign concept for anyone who has been part of or observed a labour protest in T&T.
But at Wednesday’s Labour Day rally in Fyzabad, members of the trade unions stood firmly by these lyrics, standing undeterred by the showers which drenched workers during the 82nd anniversary of the event.
Critical of Government’s handling of the economy, retrenchments, a high murder toll and a failing health system, Joint Trade Union Movement (JTUM) leader Ancel Roget says that attempts were being made to return the working class to plantation life.
Roget made a call for citizens to unite and rebuild society on the basis of equity and social justice during the 82nd Labour Day celebrations in Fyzabad on Wednesday.
On the eve of Labour Day the General Secretary of the National Trade Union Centre (NATUC) Michael Annisette has said the time for social justice is now.
Annisette is currently representing “Labour” at the 108th Session of the International Labour Conference being held in Geneva, Switzerland, from June 10 – 21, 2019. He forms part of the Trinidad and Tobago delegation, comprising the Government, Employer and Labour.
