FITUN supports Steelworkers

Trade Union FITUN says it supports the Steel Workers' Union of Trinidad and Tobago in their current advocacy for the reopening of Bids for the sale of the Steel Plant in Point Lisas. 
The union said, “We wish to declare that we stand in total solidarity with our comrades” The steelworkers protested on Tuesday at the Couva Roundabout in a bid to block the sale of the ArcelorMittal steel plant.

6 am protest at Couva Roundabout

Members of the Steel Workers Union of Trinidad & Tobago has signalled its intention to protest at the Couva roundabout from 6 am on Tuesday. The Union says this action results from allegations that the Nu-Iron Unlimited is about to purchase the entire Steel Plant facility formerly known as ArcelorMittal.
Its members say that the company is purchasing the ArcelorMittal Steel Plant for less than the value of the unpaid separation benefits of the former workers.

Roget: No job safe in T&T

Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU) President-General Ancel Roget says the Joint Trade Union Movement (JTUM) is on a rapid mobilisation campaign to raise awareness and consciousness that no worker is safe in T&T.

He was speaking at JTUM's campaign for national resistance against austerity at the Banking, Insurance and General Workers Union's (BIGWU) head office in Barataria, yesterday.

Roget said “We give people a job to ensure that they maintain and increase the standard of living for everybody, but by accepting that job, they're allowing our jobs to slip away.
