Thousands gather to celebrate return of France's World Cup team

Thousands have gathered in Paris to congratulate France's national football team as they began their bus parade towards Champs-Elysees as it is revealed the team will be given the Legion of Honour by the state - after they won a second World Cup. 

The victorious footballers landed at Charles de Gaulle Airport earlier today and are now making their way down streets of the capital in a bus towards the triumphant parade. 

Croatia beat England 2-1 to qualify for final vs France

Croatia advanced to its first World Cup final by joining Argentina (1990) as the only teams to win a semifinal match they trailed at halftime.

Croatia fell behind on Kieran Trippier’s free kick in the fifth minute, but leveled the score on Ivan Perisic’s leaping, left-footed volley in the 68th minute.

Mario Mandzukic scored the game-winner in extra time, a left-footed shot from the left side of the box that beat England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

England was looking to advance to its first World Cup final since 1966. Croatia will play France in Moscow on Sunday.

France beat Belgium to qualify for World Cup final

France advanced to the World Cup final for the first time since 2006 with a 1-0 win over Belgium on Tuesday.

Samuel Umtiti scored the only goal with a header in the 51st minute.

France, the 1998 champion and 2006 runner-up, will play either Croatia or England in Sunday's final in Moscow.

There was less at stake the last time the teams last went head-to-head at the World Cup, a 4-2 victory for France in the third-place match in 1986.

Brazil crash out with 2-1 defeat to Belgium

Belgium ended Brazil's dream of a sixth World Cup title when they beat the South Americans 2-1 in a dramatic, enthralling end-to-end quarter-final to earn a semi-final tie against France.

Brazil dominated the opening stages, with Thiago Silva hitting the post, but went behind when midfielder Fernandinho put the ball into his own net from a corner in the 13th minute.

Belgium took advantage of some wide open spaces in the Brazil defence when Romelu Lukaku found an unmarked Kevin de Bruyne who fired home their second goal in the 31st.

France beat Uruguay to qualify for World Cup semis

Raphael Varane’s glancing header and a goalkeeping blunder that gifted Antoine Griezmann a soft goal gave France a 2-0 victory over Uruguay in the first World Cup quarter-final on Friday and a set up a last-four tie with Brazil or Belgium.

Varane’s 40th-minute header from a Griezmann free kick was only the second goal Uruguay had conceded all tournament.

The South Americans went close to equalising just before the break only for Martin Caceres’s goal-bound header to be brilliantly turned onto a post by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Sweden knock Switzerland out World Cup

Sweden has advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 1994 with a 1-0 win over Switzerland.The Swedes took the lead in the 66th minute at St. Petersburg when Emil Forsberg’s right-foot shot deflected off defender Manuel Akanji and past the wrong-footed Yann Sommer.

Forsberg also cleared a corner off his own line to preserve Sweden’s lead in the 80th minute.

Belgium dashes Japan's dreams with stunning 3-2 comeback

Belgium scored in the closing seconds of stoppage time to rally and stun an upset-minded Japan 3-2 in the World Cup round of 16 on Monday.

After a scoreless first half in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, Japan took over for much of the second half, scoring the first two goals of the match to take a 2-0 lead.

Genki Haraguchi opened up scoring in the 48th minute for Japan, followed by a goal four minutes later by teammate Takashi Inui.
