BREAKING: Health Ministry confirms first Zika-related microcephaly birth in T&T

Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh has confirmed the first Zika linked microcephaly birth in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Minister made the announcement at a news conference held by the Ministry this afternoon.

The Minister says the Zika-related microcephaly birth occurred in early September and was confirmed via blood tests.

The Ministry of Health says, however, that it cannot give health status of the baby at this time.

200 pregnant women diagnosed with Zika in T&T; 376 infections in total

The Ministry of health says 200 pregnant women have been diagnosed with the Zika virus out of a total number of 376 infections.

The Ministry issued an update on Zika infections today.

"The Ministry of Health, following consultation with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) would like to inform the public that as of September 9th, 2016, the number of confirmed cases of Zika Virus in Trinidad and Tobago stands at 376. Eleven of these cases are in Tobago. The number of Zika positive pregnancies is 200.

Death wrongfully attributed to Zika, says Health Ministry

The Ministry of Health is seeking to clear the air on the death of Keisha Howell, saying it is not true that she died from symptoms of the Zika virus.

The Ministry has issued a statement saying Howell was advised against leaving the hospital before being attended to.

The statement adds that her symptoms were not that of the Zika virus.

"The Ministry of Health notes with concern the events surrounding the death of Ms. Keisha Howell and offers condolences to her family.

Confirmed Zika cases now stand at 254

The Ministry of Health says the number of confirmed cases of Zika stand at 254 as at August 12th.

The Ministry has issued a statement on the latest Zika confirmed cases.

"The Ministry of Health, following consultation with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) would like to inform the public that as of August 12th, 2016, the number of confirmed cases of Zika Virus in Trinidad and Tobago stands at 254. Six of these cases are in Tobago. The number of Zika positive pregnancies stands at 78.
